How to dispose of common items in Burnaby

Mattress and box-spring disposal

Mattresses thicker than four inches are listed for the City's booked Large Item Pickup, and Burnaby says they must be wrapped and sealed in plastic. Bed frames and box springs are also listed. Identify each piece when requesting collection; a mattress and its box spring are separate physical items. The Eco-Centre's recycling drop-off does not accept mattresses, so driving one there without another confirmed route will not solve the problem.

Couches and large furniture

Couches, armchairs, recliners, sofa beds, desks, dressers and many other freestanding pieces appear on Burnaby's accepted pickup list. A mounted cabinet, construction waste or an excluded oversized object is a different matter. Check the City's list before booking, and describe the actual object rather than just saying “furniture”; its form asks for item details. Reusable pieces can be offered for reuse, but the Eco-Centre donation area itself does not accept furniture.

Fridges, freezers and appliances

Burnaby lists large kitchen and laundry appliances, air conditioners and hot water tanks for its Large Item Pickup. Its Eco-Centre recycling drop-off accepts small appliances, electronics and scrap metal, but the Eco-Centre donation area does not take large appliances. Book the correct large-item category instead of leaving a refrigerator by the carts, and check the current safety and preparation instructions with the City for the exact appliance.

Drywall and renovation debris

Construction waste, plywood, treated wood and mixed demolition material are not ordinary Eco-Centre recyclables. Sort drywall, clean wood, metal and garbage before choosing a Metro Vancouver facility because acceptance and rates vary by material.

Does your property type change the answer?

Burnaby explicitly includes eligible apartments, condos and townhomes in the Large Item Pickup program, with up to six items per complex per pickup, rather than the three-item house/duplex booking. This is a complex allowance, not an individual resident entitlement. Ask the property manager or strata who books the collection and where the collector can safely reach items. Confirm whether the building receives City curbside collection before assuming it qualifies.

Burnaby: book the pickup, then use the Eco-Centre separately

Make an item list before asking for a date

Burnaby's current Large Item Pickup list includes sofas and chairs, bed frames, mattresses thicker than four inches, many large appliances and even some electronics. Houses and duplexes can schedule up to three items per pickup. An eligible apartment, condo or townhome can schedule up to six per complex, coordinated at building level. Count separate pieces accurately: a bed frame, box spring and mattress do not become one item because they came from one bedroom. Check the City's accepted and rejected list when requesting a booking, since a mounted cabinet or demolition material cannot be substituted for furniture.

A mattress needs plastic; a renovation needs another route

The City says an accepted mattress must be wrapped and sealed in plastic for collection. An unwrapped one at the curb is not prepared just because a date was booked. The Large Item Pickup rejection list includes building, demolition and renovation materials such as kitchen cabinets and cement. The Eco-Centre also excludes furniture, mattresses and ordinary garbage from its recycling drop-off, although it accepts many other sorted materials, including electronics, small appliances and scrap metal. These are two services with different lists, not contradictory directions.

Use the building's approved collection point

For a strata or apartment, ask who will submit the complex booking and where the contractor can reach large items without blocking a shared bin room or fire route. Eligibility depends on City curbside collection, and the six-item allowance is per complex booking. For an item the City will not pick up, confirm the material and destination with an authorized facility before renting a vehicle. A rejected Eco-Centre trip or an unbooked couch beside the bins can cost more time than verifying the service route first.
