How the local system works
Curbside collection is coordinated regionally in the Central Okanagan. The cart has to meet size, weight and lid rules, so furniture and other oversized pieces need a separate route. The regional waste app and disposal guide identify the correct stream.
Mattress and box-spring disposal
Mattresses are handled as a special bulky category rather than normal cart garbage. Check the current landfill or depot fee and whether the box spring is counted separately.
Keep the mattress dry while you confirm the route. A box spring may count as another item, and contaminated mattresses can be refused.
Couches and large furniture
Furniture that cannot be reused may be accepted as garbage at an authorized facility. Large mixed loads are normally weighed, so separating metal and other recyclable pieces can change the route and cost.
Measure large pieces before arranging transport and tell a hauler about stairs, elevators or long carries before accepting a quote.
Fridges, freezers and appliances
Large appliances and refrigerant appliances should be declared separately. Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners can have special handling fees because refrigerant must be recovered.
Do not cut refrigerant lines or place batteries, fuel, food or household chemicals inside an appliance.
Drywall and renovation debris
Glenmore Landfill uses material categories for construction waste. Separate drywall, concrete, asphalt shingles, clean wood, metal and mixed waste, and verify asbestos controls for suspect older material.
Older drywall, texture coat, flooring and insulation may require an asbestos assessment before disturbance or disposal.
Does your property type change the answer?
Apartment and condo waste is often managed through a private contractor or strata. Ask before placing anything in a loading area or beside shared bins.
Before you pay a junk-removal company
- Confirm whether the exact item already has a municipal or regional route.
- Check booking, set-out, quantity, wrapping and property-eligibility rules.
- Compare facility charges, vehicle access, fuel and lifting help with a full-service quote.
- Tell the company about heavy material, stairs, elevators and regulated items before accepting the price.
