Mattress and box-spring disposal

For a mattress, Vancouver gives residents a concrete choice: take it to the transfer station or landfill for the mattress recycling fee, or use a private mattress/junk-removal company. Illegal alley dumping can lead to enforcement.

Couches and large furniture

Large unusable furniture generally needs a City disposal facility or private pickup. If you cannot safely transport a couch or cabinet, the transport/labour issue — not just the tipping fee — is what makes private hauling attractive.

Fridges, freezers and appliances

Appliance disposal depends on the appliance type. Some materials use the Zero Waste Centre or take-back streams, while a private hauler can handle transport. Confirm the exact appliance before loading it.

Drywall and renovation debris

Vancouver is a strong example of why renovation debris needs its own guide. New drywall, used drywall, asbestos-containing material, wood and mixed garbage have different acceptance rules and fees.

Does your property type change the answer?

House and duplex residents do not get a catch-all City large-item pickup simply because they have curbside garbage service. In apartments/condos, building management can have a separate paid or private disposal arrangement.

Make two piles before loading

Vancouver's Zero Waste Centre takes a range of separated materials for reuse and recycling; garbage and fee-based recycling go through the Vancouver South Transfer Station first. The City specifically advises loading garbage and fee items so they can be dropped off before visiting the Zero Waste Centre. A truck with a mattress, scrap metal and household garbage can therefore involve more than one stop or fee. This is why leaving everything in an alley is not a municipal bulky collection plan: the City says its residential pickup does not take big items.

Mattresses and drywall have unusually precise rules

A mattress or box spring can be recycled at the transfer station or landfill for a per-piece fee, with a daily limit of four at the landfill. Bedbug contamination requires wrapping, sealing and labelling under the City's instructions. New drywall has its own small-load fee and declaration, while used drywall follows a different landfill and preparation pathway because age and asbestos concerns matter. Ask a contractor which type of drywall is in the load rather than assuming “gypsum” is a single disposal category.

Building collection and private hauling

Condos often have a property-managed bin room and a booked move elevator. Confirm the pickup point and whether a private hauler may use the loading bay; do not stage a sofa in a lane without the building's process. A hauling quote should state whether mattress recycling, travel to an approved facility and applicable disposal fees are covered. Donation is useful only after a recipient agrees to take the actual item and condition; a rain-soaked couch left outside may lose that option before collection.
