- Primary route
- Do not assume a couch or mattress will be taken beside a City cart. Victoria does not advertise routine municipal bulky pickup as part of ordinary cart collection; use reuse, a CRD-approved drop-off option or a private hauler.

How to dispose of common items in Victoria
Mattress and box-spring disposal
Hartland has a mattress recycling route with item-specific charges in addition to applicable load fees. Confirm current hours, limits and preparation before leaving home.
Couches and large furniture
Usable furniture should be offered only to an organization or recipient that has agreed to take it. Broken furniture can be self-hauled to an accepting facility or removed privately.
Fridges, freezers and appliances
Metal appliances, electronics and refrigerant-containing appliances use different recycling streams. Check the CRD directory rather than mixing them into a furniture or garbage load.
Drywall and renovation debris
Drywall, concrete, clean wood and mixed construction debris can have separate acceptance rules at regional facilities. Keep these materials separated and check for asbestos-related drywall requirements before disturbing older renovation material.
Does your property type change the answer?
Many apartments, condos and commercial properties have private collection contracts rather than the City's residential service. Building management controls the bin room and bulky-item staging rules.

City carts and regional disposal are different services
Victoria's ordinary residential cart service is not a standing large-furniture pickup. The Capital Regional District operates Hartland Landfill and the regional What Goes Where tool. For a mattress, sofa or appliance too large for the cart, identify the material in the CRD directory and confirm an accepted facility or a willing reuse outlet before arranging transport. An apartment or condo may have private waste collection and a building-specific loading schedule, so the City's cart route may not serve that address at all.
Hartland is not a single undifferentiated dump
At Hartland's public drop-off depot, drivers describe the load to the attendant, are weighed and are directed to a recycling area or a pay-by-weight disposal area. Wood categories matter: the CRD lists clean wood and treated wood as banned from general refuse while accepting them through specific recovery routes. Clean renovation and demolition waste can require pre-approval. A mixed trailer of a sofa, lumber and old flooring is therefore worth sorting before departure. Check the current accepted-item and controlled-waste instructions rather than relying on a neighbour's old tip fee.
Consider the trip as well as the item
Hartland is outside the City of Victoria, and the CRD currently alerts drivers to possible travel delays near the landfill. Secure the load and allow time for the scale and separate unloading. Household hazardous products have their own handling point and should not be hidden inside a furniture load. A private quote can be practical when a strata will allow only a narrow loading window, but confirm that disposal and any special-material fee are included. Reuse depends on condition and a receiving organization agreeing in advance.
