How to dispose of common items in Nanaimo

Appliances and special items

Refrigerant-containing appliances have a $25 per-unit surcharge at RDN facilities. Other recyclable appliances/metal should be separated from mixed garbage.

Drywall and renovation debris

RDN facilities accept construction/demolition streams, but rates vary sharply by material. Sort gypsum, wood, roofing and metal before arrival.

Mattress and box-spring disposal

The RDN landfill accepts mattresses and box springs with a $25 per-unit surcharge in addition to the applicable load fee.

Before you set out or haul a large item

In Nanaimo, classify the item before choosing the disposal route. Furniture, mattresses, refrigerant appliances, electronics, household hazardous waste and construction debris can be governed by different collection or facility rules even when they come from the same home.

Use City of Nanaimo — Garbage to re-check the current collection date or booking requirement, item dimensions or weight limits, facility hours, fees and preparation instructions. If the guide uses a regional authority, that is intentional: the regional waste operator may control disposal even when curbside service is associated with the municipality.
