Mattress and box-spring disposal

Mattresses qualify as large/bulky items. If an item is contaminated with bed bugs, London requires it to be wrapped and sealed in plastic before curbside pickup.

Before set-out, check for any wrapping, booking, item-count or building-management requirement. If the mattress is reusable, confirm that the recipient actually accepts used mattresses before transporting it.

Couches and large furniture

Couches and large wooden furniture can be booked. The City generally asks residents not to dismantle furniture unless a specific instruction says otherwise; glass or sharp components need safe preparation.

Furniture is where local differences become obvious. A couch may be free at the curb in one city, require a booking in another, or need a depot trip in a third. Do not use a national article as a substitute for this local rule.

Fridges, freezers and appliances

Appliances and electronics are specifically excluded from the large-furniture booking route, so a fridge, stove or TV should be checked against the appropriate separate program.

Refrigerant appliances deserve a separate check because the cooling system can trigger special handling. Electronics, batteries and propane cylinders also use their own streams in many municipalities.

Drywall and renovation debris

Renovation materials are not accepted through the large-furniture booking service. Keep drywall, lumber, tile and similar debris separate from the bulky household-item pile.

Keep construction material separate from ordinary household junk. Drywall, concrete, tile, treated wood, paint and hazardous material can have different facilities, weight charges or safety requirements.

Does your property type change the answer?

This booking service is for curbside residential households. Businesses are not eligible, and residents of buildings using a different waste arrangement should follow their property-specific instructions.

Before you pay a junk-removal company

  1. Check whether your municipal or regional program already takes the exact item.
  2. Confirm whether you need a booking, item limit, wrapping or special preparation.
  3. If self-haul is required, compare the facility charge with the cost of a suitable vehicle, fuel and lifting help.
  4. Use private hauling when labour, access, transport or timing is the real problem.
Why this matters: paying a hauler can be convenient, but in several Canadian cities ordinary mattresses or couches already have a municipal pickup route. The cheapest option depends on the local rule first and the private-market price second.
