How to dispose of common items in Hamilton
Mattress and box-spring disposal
Hamilton is strict about mattress preparation: mattresses and box springs must be completely wrapped and sealed in plastic, including when bed bugs or biohazard contamination are present. Unsealed mattresses can be refused.
Couches and large furniture
Furniture can be booked as bulk waste, subject to the four-item booking limit and lifting/size requirements. Sofa beds and recliners should be tied so they cannot unfold during collection.
Fridges, freezers and appliances
Metal and appliance disposal can follow separate recycling or collection rules. Remove batteries from items before bulk set-out where applicable and check the exact product before booking.
Drywall and renovation debris
Do not treat a renovation pile like furniture. Wood, fixtures and construction materials can have separate Community Recycling Centre or landfill rules, and some materials are excluded from bulk pickup.
Does your property type change the answer?
Hamilton’s eligibility language matters. The online curbside bulk program is for qualifying single-family properties with five units or fewer that use curbside collection; town homes are not eligible for the online service. Apartments and other building types can use different bulk-item procedures.

Book first, then use the assigned collection day
Hamilton's online bulk request is for eligible curbside homes with five units or fewer; townhomes cannot currently use that online route. The online request is collected on the regular collection day in two weeks, while a phone booking needs at least a week's notice. A maximum of four items goes with one booking. This makes an unplanned move-out a different problem from a scheduled furniture replacement: the crew will not treat items left at the curb on any convenient day as a valid request.
Size and wrapping can decide whether collection happens
Each item must be safely liftable by two workers, at most 90 kg and normally no longer than 1.2 m. Every mattress and box spring must be fully wrapped and sealed in plastic; the City says unwrapped ones will not be collected. A sofa bed or recliner should be tied closed, mirrors and glass tables sealed in cardboard, and carpet rolled and tied. Tell the City about known bedbugs or biohazard material when booking. A useful pickup plan includes protective material and labour to prepare the object, not just its weight.
For apartments, verify the actual procedure
The online form's eligibility is narrower than “any Hamilton address.” A building's superintendent may have a different bulky-item process, and the 2026 safe-apartment rules require some buildings to manage waste and bulk storage. Ask management before leaving anything by a shared container. Hamilton's Community Recycling Centres are another option for accepted material, though disposal can have a charge. A dismantled bathtub or wood offcut also has preparation rules, so check the City item guidance before putting renovation leftovers in the furniture booking.
