How to dispose of common items in Québec City
Mattress and box-spring disposal
A mattress is the kind of bulky object the City may collect after registration. It can also be taken to a permanent ecocentre; a mobile ecocentre may redirect a trailer carrying a bulky mattress to a permanent site.
Couches and large furniture
Sofas, dressers and office furniture are examples of bulky objects. Collection is by request, with size and two-person handling limits.
Fridges, freezers and appliances
Refrigerated appliances are included in the City’s bulky-item category but may have their own collection request. Check the exact appliance when submitting the request.
Drywall and renovation debris
Permanent ecocentres accept construction, renovation and demolition material. Mobile ecocentres do not accept CRD, even in small quantities.

The City pickup is residential. For a condo or apartment, residents should also follow the building’s designated set-out location and avoid blocking sidewalks or access areas.
Québec City: register the bulky object with 311
Report the exact object and location
Québec City's bulky collection is a request service through an online intervention form or 311. The current 311 information sheet asks for the list of objects and the placement location, either at street edge or by the container where applicable. It separates ordinary bulky objects from refrigerant equipment such as a refrigerator or air conditioner. A fridge is therefore not just another “furniture” entry on the request. The service is offered to residential properties and certain authorized nonprofits, not to ordinary commercial and institutional generators.
Wait for the assigned day
The City says to bring accepted items out after 7 p.m. the evening before the collection or before 7 a.m. on that day. Do not block people walking, cycling or driving. An item must be movable by two people without mechanical equipment, and the City's item lookup identifies what is eligible for “collecte spéciale.” A large object left outside before registration can obstruct a narrow sidewalk for days; the 311 case and its pickup timing are part of the disposal plan.
Fridge doors and ecocentre loads
For refrigerant appliances with doors, Québec City requires the door to be removed or neutralized and the appliance placed safely near the building or container to reduce entrapment risk. The five permanent ecocentres offer another route for accepted bulky items and materials, but mobile ecocentres have narrower intake: bulky trailer loads and construction debris may have to go to a permanent site. Check the chosen site's limits before borrowing a trailer. A renovation with drywall, a sofa and an old cooling appliance should be divided into the applicable City routes rather than registered as one household object.
Use the City's classification before renting transport
The 311 guidance defines an eligible bulky object as a domestic item over 0.5 m³ that two people can move safely. The City's linked “Ça va où?” lookup indicates whether a particular material is eligible for special collection. A smaller bag of renovation debris or an object that requires lifting equipment should not be relabelled as a bulky household item. Record the 311 request and assigned placement instructions for the building manager if the item must go near a shared container.
