Mattress and box-spring disposal

Mattresses and box springs are accepted at Eco Stations for a per-item fee. During Big Bin Event season, mattresses are among the bulky items that can be accepted at no charge at those events.

Couches and large furniture

A sofa or similar large item can go to an Eco Station for the large-item fee, or to a Big Bin Event when one is available and the item is accepted.

Fridges, freezers and appliances

Large appliances are accepted through Eco Stations and Big Bin Events, but some appliance types can have special preparation or handling requirements.

Drywall and renovation debris

Eco Stations accept renovation material under separate loose/mixed-waste charges. Ordinary community recycling depots do not accept renovation debris.

Apartment and condo residents should not leave bulky items beside a shared dumpster. The City specifically warns that large items left beside dumpsters are not collected and become the property owner’s responsibility.

Use the right City site for the load

Edmonton's neighbourhood recycling depots are for accepted recyclables, not a place to leave a broken dresser or mattress. The City describes furniture and renovation debris abandoned beside those depots as illegal dumping. Its four Eco Stations take a broader range, including bulky items and household hazardous waste, with fee categories for furniture, mattresses and mixed material. List each item before loading a vehicle: a mattress, half-used paint and boards from a remodel can require different handling once you arrive.

Seasonal events can change the economics

Big Bin Events are offered seasonally, generally between May and September. The City lists furniture, mattresses and large appliances among accepted bulky items without the normal Eco Station charge at those events. The event schedule and exclusions govern the specific day, so check them before promising a free disposal date. Outside an event, an Eco Station has posted charges for bulky items, and a loose renovation load can be priced differently. That distinction is especially useful for a small clear-out that can wait versus a move with a fixed deadline.

Shared dumpsters do not extend the City's service

In an apartment or condo, placing a couch beside a dumpster may transfer the disposal problem to the building owner; the City says these items are not collected as ordinary dumpster waste. Request the manager's bulky-item procedure, then determine whether the item can be delivered to an Eco Station or whether a hauler must enter the property. For appliances, identify any refrigerant-containing unit in the booking or drop-off inquiry. A refrigerator and a toaster should not be described as one generic “appliance” category.

Published Eco Station fees

Small furniture items are $11 each, large items such as sofas $21, and mattresses or box springs $19 each. Appliances requiring refrigerant removal are $21 each; other accepted electronics and appliances have no-charge routes.

Residential versus business disposal

Residents can bring up to eight eligible tires per day; commercial tires are not accepted. Household hazardous-waste and yard-waste rules also differ for business customers.
