Mattress and box-spring disposal

An unusable mattress goes to a City Eco Centre for disposal and charges apply. A single mattress or other small charge load generally falls under the $25 minimum-load structure if the total charge load is under 250 kg.

Couches and large furniture

Large broken furniture should go to an Eco Centre rather than beside the black cart. Smaller broken household pieces can go in the black cart only if they fit properly and the lid closes.

Fridges, freezers and appliances

Fridges, freezers and other refrigerant appliances can be taken to an Eco Centre. The 2026 rate schedule adds a $17 refrigerant-removal surcharge per item, plus the applicable weight/load charge, even if the refrigerant was already removed.

Drywall and renovation debris

Eco Centres accept a wide range of renovation and construction material. Sorted drywall has its own 2026 rate; mixed material can be charged differently, so separating loads before arrival can matter.

Does your property type change the answer?

The cart rules apply to residential cart customers. Condos, apartments and commercial properties can use different private or centralized waste systems, so residents in those buildings should check property-management instructions before moving anything to a waste room.

The black cart is the size test

A sofa, mattress or large cabinet that cannot fit in Calgary's black cart should not be left loose beside it. The City's Eco Centres take many oversized household items and construction materials; community cleanup events are a separate opportunity, with event-specific accepted items. Check an event's list before assuming that a mattress, appliance or renovation load will be taken there. For a single unwanted couch, compare transport and the Eco Centre charge with a private quote rather than paying for a mixed truck before checking municipal options.

Sorting affects the entire chargeable load

Calgary posts separate rates for garbage, sorted drywall and other streams. If chargeable and free materials are mixed, the load can be charged as a whole; place them in the vehicle so staff can direct each category without unpacking everything. The 2026 schedule lists a minimum charge for a small chargeable load and a separate refrigerant surcharge for applicable appliances. Weight, material and minimum fee all matter, so “one truckload” does not describe a useful price. Secure debris and keep hazardous liquids separate from furniture.

A condo clean-out has another gate

Apartment and condo bins are not an overflow space for bulk items. Ask the property manager about loading access, a collection-room booking and the building's hauler before moving a large object through shared areas. For a renovation, ask whether a contractor has already included disposal; drywall, wood and mixed waste can have different drop-off routes and charges. The City rates are a self-haul comparison, not a promise that a private truck can tip every type of material at the same price.
