Mattress and box-spring disposal

A mattress or box spring can count as the bulky item for a regular garbage collection cycle at an eligible property. If the household already has another bulky piece out, do not assume both will be collected.

Couches and large furniture

A couch, dresser or similar furniture piece can use the one-bulky-item allowance at a single-unit home. Keep the item safely accessible and follow the 7 a.m. set-out deadline.

Fridges, freezers and appliances

Appliances can be bulky items, but refrigerant appliances need CFC removal first. That requirement is one reason a fridge should not be treated exactly like a couch.

Drywall and renovation debris

Single-unit households have a limited renovation-waste substitution allowance with size/weight rules, while small multi-unit buildings do not. Larger C&D jobs should use an approved C&D facility rather than curbside garbage.

Does your property type change the answer?

Halifax is a good example of property type changing the answer: single-unit and two-to-six-unit buildings have different bulky-item allowances, while larger apartment buildings can operate under a different waste arrangement.

Halifax: collection allowance depends on the building

One large item can use the fortnight's opportunity

Halifax Regional Municipality's household garbage collection is generally bi-weekly. Its current garbage page describes one bulky furniture or appliance item per collection for a single-unit house; the City's householder guide describes a two-item allowance per building for small two-to-six-unit properties. That is a building allowance rather than two objects for every apartment. Check the current address guide and property type before placing a couch and a mattress together at the curb. Material should be ready by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day.

Refrigerant gas must be dealt with before the appliance

A fridge, freezer, dehumidifier or air conditioner is not simply ordinary furniture. Halifax offers a residential refrigerant-removal request; check that process and its scheduling before a curbside disposal. Do not puncture the system to make it fit a general pickup. The distinction matters for a kitchen renovation where the old refrigerator, cabinetry and regular garbage are all coming out at once. The bulky allowance does not authorize a pile of construction material.

Renovation bundles have a property limit

The City's householder guidance gives single-unit homes a limited prepared renovation-bundle substitution for garbage bags, while excluding renovation waste from the two-to-six-unit building arrangement. A bigger demolition load belongs on a separate approved disposal route; the municipality's construction and demolition system includes licensed facilities. Residents of larger apartment buildings should use their building manager's collection plan. A private quote should identify who carries the items, whether CFC treatment is arranged and where building material will go, since those are separate tasks under HRM rules.

Keep special waste apart from the bulk allowance

Paint, solvents, batteries and similar household special waste are not simply another bulky furniture item. HRM operates a scheduled household special-waste drop-off program, and the municipal waste facility page lists current locations, hours and fees for other loads. This matters when clearing a garage in the same week as a sofa replacement: one approved curbside bulky piece does not authorize a mixed pile of chemicals and demolition debris.
