Mattress and box-spring disposal

Mattresses are specifically included in Winnipeg’s large-item service. Schedule the pickup in advance; the 2026 large-item fee applies per item.

Couches and large furniture

Furniture is a standard large-item example, subject to size/weight and safety limits. Up to ten qualifying large items can be requested per pickup.

Fridges, freezers and appliances

Ordinary large appliances and appliances with ozone-depleting substances are priced differently. In 2026, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and water coolers use the $55-per-item ODS service fee; the City allows up to 10 items per special collection.

Drywall and renovation debris

Cabinets and other items previously affixed to the property, plus construction/demolition waste, are excluded from the large-item service. These loads need a landfill or other approved disposal route.

The special collection service is available to properties receiving City collection service. Residents in buildings using private service should follow the building or hauler’s rules instead.

Winnipeg: the booking clock matters

Start two full business days ahead

Winnipeg's large-item pickup is a paid addition to the regular collection route, not an automatic allowance beside the carts. The City asks for a request at least two full business days before the scheduled recycling and garbage day, with up to ten accepted items per request. A Friday move-out planned on Wednesday evening can miss that window even though it appears to be “two days” away. Use the address calendar, then make the request and keep the confirmation before moving items outside.

Know the difference between a mattress and a refrigerator

The City's 2026 posted large-item charge is per item, so a mattress, box spring and sofa are three pieces, not a single bedroom set. Appliances with ozone-depleting refrigerants use a separate service and fee. The general size and weight limits apply to many large items, with specific handling for mattresses. Construction and demolition material is excluded: dismantled drywall and bathroom tiles do not become eligible merely because they are bagged. Sort renovation waste from furniture before booking.

Winter affects safe set-out

In a Winnipeg winter, leave the approved collection point accessible rather than hiding an item behind a snowbank or blocking a sidewalk with a sofa. A collection crew must be able to identify and handle each booked object. For a duplex or apartment, first establish whether the property receives City collection or a private hauler; a resident of a private-service building cannot simply use a nearby house's City route. If a deadline is close, compare the paid City booking with self-haul and a private quote while keeping special refrigerant handling separate.

Pick the right depot if self-hauling

Winnipeg's neighbourhood Community Recycling Depots take blue-cart recyclables; they explicitly reject furniture, appliances, renovation debris, hazardous waste and garbage. The three larger 4R Winnipeg Depots accept various reusable, recyclable and compostable materials, but Pacific and Panet are recycling-only. Brady is the 4R site that also accepts garbage at the posted tipping fee. Check Recyclepedia for the precise item before driving, and keep a chargeable load separate from free streams. Residents must unload their own trailer. For a multi-unit property with City bin service, the City says large-item pickup can still be requested for a fee; ask building management to coordinate that collection rather than assuming all bin-service residents need a private hauler.
