How to dispose of common items in Sault Ste. Marie
Mattress and box-spring disposal
Mattresses are not something to balance on or beside the automated garbage cart. Confirm the landfill/current disposal instructions or use private removal.
Appliances and special items
Refrigeration units are free of an appliance surcharge if properly tagged as refrigerant-free; untagged units cost an additional $30 plus the landfill user fee.
Drywall and renovation debris
The landfill separates concrete/brick/shingles, wood/brush, metal and other streams, so sort a renovation load before driving.
Before you set out or haul a large item
In Sault Ste. Marie, classify the item before choosing the disposal route. Furniture, mattresses, refrigerant appliances, electronics, household hazardous waste and construction debris can be governed by different collection or facility rules even when they come from the same home.
Use City of Sault Ste. Marie — City Landfill to re-check the current collection date or booking requirement, item dimensions or weight limits, facility hours, fees and preparation instructions. If the guide uses a regional authority, that is intentional: the regional waste operator may control disposal even when curbside service is associated with the municipality.
