Atikokan junk disposal and bulky items

Where to take furniture, mattresses, appliances and household waste in Atikokan — with local pickup and drop-off rules kept separate.

Staging index candidate: Atikokan By-law 06-24 explicitly identifies mattresses and furniture as bulky items and permits qualifying bulky-item disposal at municipal waste sites, subject to the attendant’s decision. Confirm your exact item, sorting instructions and applicable tokens before travel.

Quick answer for Atikokan

Atikokan’s regular curbside program is for approved garbage containers, not loose mattresses or sofas. Waste Management By-law 06-24 defines mattresses and furniture as “bulky items”; its sections 10.3 and 10.7 address bulky materials at municipal disposal sites and require attendant approval. The Pipeline Road Landfill is the Town’s disposal site; call first because a particular load can still be refused.

1. What ordinary curbside collection covers

Atikokan Public Works collects household garbage on assigned routes, with maximum two normal bags/cans plus up to two tagged extra bags; maximum capacity 121 L and maximum weight 15 kg per receptacle. Approved bags/bundles should be at the collection point by 7 a.m. on collection day. The standard rules do not establish loose sofa or mattress pickup.

2. Regional landfill or transfer-station route

Pipeline Road Landfill is 4 km down Pipeline Road off Highway 622. The Town publishes Sunday–Thursday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Friday, Saturday and statutory holidays closed, subject to notices. By-law 06-24 sections 9–10 require inspection and the attendant’s permission. Section 10.3 excepts large or bulky items from the normal receptacle requirement, but that is not unconditional acceptance of every mattress, upholstered couch or unusual material.

3. Appliances, chemicals and special waste

The landfill excludes hazardous waste materials including light bulbs, batteries and hazardous liquids. Separate battery-recycling drop-offs include the municipal office and other named Town partners. Refrigeration, electronics, tires, construction material and large furniture should be checked against the correct Town stream and accepted-material rules before travel.

4. Charges, schedules and booking

Town rates currently list $2 per ordinary garbage bag/bundle (up to 33 lb), $20 per pickup-box or small trailer load (up to 4 × 8 ft) and $30 for larger trailers under 6 × 14 ft. The 2024 Waste Management By-law requires tipping tokens and allows the attendant to classify or refuse loads. These are general load rates; the municipality does not state a guaranteed mattress/sofa per-item rate in the sources reviewed.

Confirm with the landfill before hauling

The by-law supplies a specific, source-backed bulky-item route, but it does not guarantee acceptance of each mattress type, upholstered couch, bedbug-affected item or commercial load. Obtain the attendant’s current approval and exact tipping-token amount before travelling. Do not leave bulky items with regular garbage.

Waste and recycling rules can vary by building type, address, operator and material. Large items should not be left at the curb unless your applicable collection program explicitly authorizes them. Facility acceptance is different from curbside acceptance.

Before you load a truck or place an item outside

  1. Check whether municipal or regional service applies to your property.
  2. Identify the item’s exact stream: mattress, furniture, major appliance, metal, hazardous waste, construction material or ordinary household refuse.
  3. Check the official fee, facility hours and any required booking or advance approval.
  4. Secure your load and follow facility instructions for separation or special handling.
