Quick answer for Oliver
For mattresses and box springs, the official RDOS 2026 Fee and Charges Bylaw explicitly lists Oliver Landfill as an accepted destination at $19 per unit, effective May 1, 2026. The fee applies to each mattress or box spring, regardless of size, up to ten per load per day. This is a drop-off route, not permission to leave the mattress beside the Town garbage cart. RDOS also lists an annual spring large-item collection for certain Town of Oliver addresses south of Fairview Road and Park Drive; the 2026 spring date has passed and eligibility varies by address.
1. What ordinary curbside collection covers
The Town of Oliver contracts curbside waste collection to Waste Connections of Canada. Residents should use the 2026 municipal collection calendar for their address, keep carts properly closed and set them out by 7 a.m. The contractor handles missed collection questions at 250-498-4888.
2. Regional landfill or transfer-station route
Oliver Landfill is at 498 Saddle Ridge Road, operated by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen. Opening days/hours vary seasonally, and the site separates waste categories. Confirm acceptance for furniture and refrigerators, particularly when appliances contain refrigerants; call RDOS solid waste at 250-490-4129 before visiting with a mixed or unusual load.
3. Appliances, chemicals and special waste
RDOS says Oliver organic composting accepts food and yard waste through the Town curbside system but does not currently take public organic drop-offs. Compostable plastic bags are not accepted in the organics stream. Contaminated demolition or hazardous waste needs separate approval or a different channel.
4. Charges, schedules and booking
As of May 1, 2026, RDOS lists $19 per mattress or box spring at Oliver Landfill and $125 per tonne for refuse without recyclables. Unsecured loads may be charged double (minimum $10), according to the landfill instructions. Applicable separated-material, commercial, and mixed-load fees differ.
What still needs a last check
Only participating addresses qualify for seasonal curbside large-item events. The 2026 event should not be shown as upcoming. Sofa, large appliance, mixed-load, and renovation-waste routes must be checked against the current RDOS accepted-material category; do not assume the mattress fee covers those items.
Waste and recycling rules can vary by building type, address, operator and material. Large items should not be left at the curb unless your applicable collection program explicitly authorizes them. Facility acceptance is different from curbside acceptance.
Before you load a truck or place an item outside
- Check whether municipal or regional service applies to your property.
- Identify the item’s exact stream: mattress, furniture, major appliance, metal, hazardous waste, construction material or ordinary household refuse.
- Check the official fee, facility hours and any required booking or advance approval.
- Secure your load and follow facility instructions for separation or special handling.
