Quick answer for Athabasca
Mattresses and box springs have an identified regional self-haul option, not ordinary cart pickup. The Athabasca Regional Waste Commission says member residents can take these directly to Boyle Landfill or the Regional Landfill without a mattress charge; transfer-site drop-off costs $10 per mattress or box spring. Terms for commercial haulers differ.
1. What ordinary curbside collection covers
The Town of Athabasca directs residents to its zone-specific waste and recycling collection schedule. Set waste out by 7 a.m.; some areas collect Tuesday and others Thursday. The town says its recycling system changed October 1, 2026, to see-through recycling bags rather than recycling bins.
2. Regional landfill or transfer-station route
The commission operates regional landfills and transfer sites. Select the correct facility using its “Where Do I Take My Waste” directory before driving; the Town also lists its Athabasca transfer/recycling contact for collection questions.
3. Appliances, chemicals and special waste
The commission accepts furniture through specified transfer-site/landfill routes. Appliances without refrigerant are generally $10 each at commission sites; appliances with refrigerant $20 each except during announced discount events. Household hazardous materials use designated collection streams.
4. Charges, schedules and booking
Household garbage bags at commission transfer sites are listed at $2 each. Commission member residents may take qualifying domestic refuse directly to the Regional Landfill with up to 500 kg covered; identify residency, delivery-site and commercial restrictions before relying on that benefit. Furniture handled at transfer sites can cost $5–$10 each.
What still needs a last check
Confirm currently eligible member residency and selected facility; do not interpret a regional mattress drop-off option as a municipal curbside bulky pickup. Seasonal appliance-roundup discounts cannot be assumed outside advertised dates.
Waste and recycling rules can vary by building type, address, operator and material. Large items should not be left at the curb unless your applicable collection program explicitly authorizes them. Facility acceptance is different from curbside acceptance.
Before you load a truck or place an item outside
- Check whether municipal or regional service applies to your property.
- Identify the item’s exact stream: mattress, furniture, major appliance, metal, hazardous waste, construction material or ordinary household refuse.
- Check the official fee, facility hours and any required booking or advance approval.
- Secure your load and follow facility instructions for separation or special handling.
