How to dispose of common items in Sechelt
How the public disposal system works in Sechelt
The Sechelt Landfill is the Sunshine Coast Regional District’s main disposal site for Sechelt-area household garbage and many special materials. Not every material belongs in the landfill stream: the SCRD directs some recycling and green-waste streams to separate local depots or processors.
Loads must be separated by material type. Mixed loads containing recyclable or controlled materials can be rejected or charged differently, so do not treat a renovation cleanout as one undifferentiated garbage load.
Facilities, hours and access
The Sechelt Landfill is at 4901 Dusty Road, Sechelt. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Monday is closed, and no loads are accepted after 4:50 p.m. Holiday closures and Christmas Eve hours can differ.
Payment at the landfill is by debit or credit card. Site staff have final say on acceptance and charges when a load arrives.
Fees, free streams and limits
For 2026, municipal solid waste is $180 per tonne. Mattress and box-spring fees are $30 each, rising to $35 each when five or more are brought in one load; crib mattresses are $5.
Yard and garden waste is no charge when the load is no more than 4 m³ or 0.5 tonnes. Larger accepted green-waste loads are $86 per tonne. Other recyclable and controlled materials have their own rates.
Mattresses, couches and household furniture
Mattresses and box springs have a per-item charge rather than the ordinary garbage rate. The 2026 schedule lists $30 per mattress or box spring, with a higher per-piece rate for loads of five or more.
The 2026 schedule also introduces unit pricing for common upholstered furniture such as couches, armchairs, loveseats and recliners. Keep these pieces separate from general garbage so staff can apply the correct stream and fee.
Appliances, electronics, paint, propane and other special items
Some major appliances covered by the provincial MARR program are accepted at no charge, while ammonia-containing appliances such as certain refrigerators have a separate per-unit fee. Propane cylinders and tires also have their own fee categories.
Paint and Product Care materials are accepted at no charge at the Sechelt Landfill. Electronics and small appliances may use free stewardship depots, so check the SCRD recycling-depot information before paying landfill charges for an item that has a dedicated recycling route.
Renovation, construction and yard debris
Renovation debris must be separated. The SCRD specifically warns that mixed demolition loads can contain material that belongs in recycling or controlled-waste streams instead of municipal solid waste.
Drywall is restricted: the landfill accepts drywall date-stamped 1990 and newer under the current asbestos-control rules. Wood from demolition projects can be routed to Salish Soils rather than buried as garbage. Yard and garden waste has a no-charge threshold before the per-tonne rate applies.
